Stuart Weitzman is an American designer, entrepreneur and owner of his eponymous high-end shoe company, Stuart Weitzman. Weitzman began designing shoes in his 20s, for his father’s shoe factory. After his father’s passing in 1965, Weitzman took over the company with his brother, but sold it to a company in Spain six years later. Weitzman continued designing shoes for the company and eventually bought back the business in 1994. The company is now owned by Coach, per a January 2015 sale, but Weitzman remains a designer for the brand.
Weitzman is known for using unique materials—vinyl, lucite, wallpaper and 24-karat gold to name a few–in his designs. His high-end designs pushed his company into global renown; Weitzman shoes are sold in over 70 countries. He has been known to provide one-of-a-kind shoes to an Oscar nominee to wear on the red carpet.
